Math team to state

The Bishop Garrigan math team was able to compete in only four of the six Great Plains Math League state-qualifying contests this school year. Three team members also took the Power Question contest in mid-March in a last attempt to qualify for state. Four team members will be continuing on to state competition at Iowa City West on Saturday, April 19. This is the first time any of the four have qualified for state, and the qualifiers include seniors Kent Recker and Melanie Myers (Melanie qualified twice), junior Ben Hellman and freshman Alex Hamilton.

The math team placed in three of the four competitions this year. The varsity was third at in December, while the junior varsity (made up of freshmen and sophomores only) finished second. At in January, the j.v. placed second. At the Bishop Garrigan tournament in February, the varsity won the small school division. There was no separate junior varsity competition at Bishop Garrigan or at the fourth competition at Dordt in March.

Good luck to Kent, Melanie, Ben and Alex at State.

Envirothon results

At the regional Envirothon, there are four categories and a Bishop Garrigan team won each category.

Andrew Elbert, Garrett Elbert, Brad Richter, D.J. Thompson and David Miller won the Aquatics category. Dana Miller, Brian Funk, Matt Elbert, Meghan Mayer and Alex Dodds won the Forestry category. Shane Koob, Joe Straub, Rebeccah Erdman, D.J. Beletti and Lee Brashear won the Wildlife category.

Bishop Garrigan’s top scoring team placed second overall and missed state competition by just four points—maybe next year!
