Music Department notes

The Instrumental and Vocal Music Departments invite you to this year’s “Leap Year” Pops Concert. With the start of a new semester, you will find students in both the Band and Choirs busy preparing a very entertaining evening for you. The large groups performing will be the Concert Band, A Cappella Choir and the Varsity Choir. Also on the program will be the Jazz Band, Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the newly-formed Show Choir, as well as solos and ensembles from the various groups. You will hear selections from Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray, Motion Picture Hits of the ‘80s and much, much more. Come for an enjoyable evening of music and fun, Thursday and Friday, Feb. 28 and 29, at 7:00 p.m. in Friedmann Auditorium.

The Music Department is completing its Premier Pizza fundraiser and will be taking Butterbraid orders Feb. 11-16, with delivery the week prior to Easter. The money raised will go toward the music trip in the spring of 2009. Thank you for your continued support for music at Bishop Garrigan.

On Friday, Feb. 22, the Music Department will host John Kohlhaas and his A Cappella ensemble from St. John University, Collegeville, MN, in concert. Kohlhaas is a 2004 graduate of BGHS. Proceeds will go toward purchasing new plumes for the band as well as toward next fall’s marching band show and to help the vocal department to buy a CD/tape stereo system for the 7th and 8th grade music room

More Reminders

The west end of Meister Drive is reserved for the Meister family as they were generous enough to purchase it at GALA. Your help with reserving this drive is very much appreciated.

*Seating on the stage is reserved for Seton students and senior citizens.

*Students are asked to not leave vehicles parked overnight in the parking lots at BGHS. This allows us to clean our lots appropriately after a snowfall.

Quiz Bowl victories

The Bishop Garrigan quiz bowl teams had their most successful day ever at the Cougar Invitational Tournament Saturday, Jan. 5, at North Kossuth in Swea City. Forty-five teams competed and four of the top 16 teams were from BGHS. The play-off teams were in two divisions, and Garrigan won both.

The team of Ethan Dahlhauser, Shane Koob, Brittany Berte and Rebeccah Erdman defeated West Bend Mallard, Boone and Sioux Central in play-offs to take the overall championship. Joe Straub, Brent Kajewski, Lee Brashear and Christopher Schmidt won the Blue Division. Their play-off victories were over Ankeny, Northeast Hamilton and North Kossuth.

Two other Golden Bear teams also made play-offs. Anna Kollasch, Michael Fakler, Jake Rosenmeyer and Alex Hamilton were the #3 seed after the morning games. They lost to Sioux Central in the quarterfinals. Mark Poeppe, Jacob Zittritsch and Vince Cruise were seeded #12 overall. They fell in the play-off opener to North Kossuth. The team of Melissa Cruise, Ashley Beisch, Mike Hellman and Nora Krahenbuhl just missed making play-offs after losing to the championship team.

On Jan. 12, the Bishop Garrigan quiz bowl team made it to the championship game at Aplington-Parkersburg High School, finishing second in the Falcon Invitational.

The team of Shane Koob, Ethan Dahlhauser and Joe Straub was undefeated in the preliminary rounds. Their victories included wins over Algona and Ankeny. They eventually lost to the top-seeded team from Class 4-A, Southeast Polk.

The Bears will attend one more major tournament in the regular season, which will be March 29 at Boone. The team has also decided to accept the challenge of competing at the 26th Annual National Academic Championship to be held June 6-9 in Chicago.

SCRIP news
