MESSAGE FROM THE ADMINISTRATORS

January is a time of new beginnings, a time to renew our commitment to God, our family, our friends, and our world.  There is so much to do to preserve this earth that God made for us, so many people to help.

Here at Bishop Garrigan, we try to instill in our students an appreciation for the blessings we have, a sensitivity to the needs of others, and a resolve to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate.

We wish you a happy, blessed New Year.

- Euguene Meister, Michael Stence, Kathee Froehlich

Quiz Bowl News

A team of three Bishop Garrigan High School freshmen took the championship in the freshman/sophomore division at the South O'Brien Wolverine Quiz Bowl Tournament held Saturday, December 8, in Paullina.  The team had a 3 - 1 record after the preliminary rounds and was seeded fourth going into playoffs.  They edged past the #1 seed from Sioux Central in the semifinals and then easily beat Unity Christian to take first place overall in the tournament.  Team members included Captain Jake Rosenmeyer, Michael Fakler, and Mike Hellman.

The Spirit Lake Invitational quiz bowl competition was rescheduled to December 15 due to weather.  On January 5 Garrigan will compete at North Kossuth.

Senior Retreat

This year the seniors will have their retreat at the American Martyrs Retreat House in Cedar Falls.  They will leave on Wednesday, January 23, at 8:15am and return by 3pm on Thursday, January 24.  The retreat house has enough room to accommodate the entire class and chaperones.  Fr. Tim Johnson (Garrigan alum) will be the retreat master.

Chaperones will include Deacon and Lorri Larsen, Rob Meister, Mike and Barb Stence.  All costs for room and board will be covered by BGHS.  All seniors are expected to attend.  If there are any problems with these arrangements, please contact Mike Stence at BGHS.

We anticipate this being a very good spiritual experience.

SCRIP NOTES

Thank-you for a wonderful 2007 SCRIP year.  This holiday season, we had over $350,000 worth of orders.  We need volunteers to help pick up gift certificates from our local businesses.  You could do this at your convenience.  Please call 295-3521 if you are interested.  We can always use more help filling orders on Thursdays at 1pm at BGHS.  A special thanks for all the volunteers who do help us.  A big thank-you to everyone who orders and have been honest and patient with the few mistakes we have made.

Wal-Mart is now a national business at 2%.  Go to www.glscrip.com to keep up on bonus percents and new national businesses, as it can change weekly.  Get order forms at L'Marie's, Sheree's Hallmark, Seton, BGHS, or online at scrip@garrigan.pvt.k12.ia.us.
