BGHS off-season work philosophy

Since research indicates a student involved in extracurricular activities has a greater chance for success during adulthood, BGHS takes pride in offering many programs. Occasionally, these programs overlap or other activities conduct out-of-season programs throughout the year. The following information is intended to provide clarification of off-season work and in-season practice.

These guidelines apply to all BGHS extracurricular activities — athletics, cheerleading, danz squad, band, choral, drama and speech.

  1. In-season activities should always take precedence over out-of-season activities. Coaches may not prohibit students from participating in off-season activity as long as it does not conflict with the regular season already in progress.

  2. No activity director can force a student to be at an off-season activity.

  3. Students are asked to not pressure other students about off-season work.

Cooperation among activity directors, parents and participants should always be in the students’ best interest.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call.

Conferences and registration

We will once again have high school registration and parent/teacher conferences on the same nights — Monday and Tuesday, March 17 and 18. The conferences and registration for the 2008-09 school year will take place in the Rochleau Center from 3:30-6:30 on both evenings.

Seton 8th graders will visit BGHS on Friday, March 14, in the morning.  On Monday evening, March 17, there will be a meeting for the eight grade parents in the ICN Room at 7 p.m.

Coaching program

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, in partnership with the Iowa Farm Bureau and Heartland Area Education Agency, is offering the fourth annual coaching authorization and endorsement program June 23-27 at Drake University.              The clinic provides the opportunity for 120 individuals to earn their coaching authorization or endorsement.

The Athletic Union will pay for all coursework, books, supplies and meals during the 5-day program. A $20 administrative fee, payable to the Heartland AEA, will be charged to each participant.

Housing will be available in the Drake University dorms at a reduced rate throughout the clinic.

Online registration begins Feb. 1 at the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union website, www.ighsau.org. The first 120 commitments received will close registration, although a small waiting list will be held. One hundred percent attendance is required for all sessions. There are still openings.

Questions? Contact Lisa Brinkmeyer, 515 288-9741, or via email at lisa@ighsau.org. The contact person at Heartland AEA is Marietta Rives, 800 255-0405, ext. 4444.

Keep watching the IGHSAU website for more details.

Text Box: Message from the Administrators

At last, we’re on the downside of winter, with the promise of spring to lift our spirits, and the promise of Easter to lift our souls.
Here at Bishop Garrigan, we try to instill in our students—and, indeed, in ourselves—a renewed love for the Christ who suffered and died for us and who arose in glorious splendor on Easter Sunday.
We hope all of you will experience His love in a very personal way this Easter season.
   God bless.
